Welcome aboard! Canal Sim is a relaxed, top-down narrowboat handling game. You take the tiller of a traditional canal boat and steer it gently along winding waterways — easing through bridges, working locks, mooring at wharves, and sharing the cut politely with other boaters.
Narrowboats are long, heavy, and slow to respond. This is a game about finesse, not speed. Take your time, read the water ahead, and bring her in gently.
Canal Sim plays in landscape orientation — hold your phone or tablet sideways. There is nothing to set up and no account to create. (The free version shows the occasional ad and needs an internet connection; the one-off ad-free upgrade lets you play offline — see the FAQ.) Just open the App and you're ready to cast off.
From the main menu, choose a stage, then pick a level. A short splash screen shows the level number and name; tap it to begin.
If you are brand new, start with the first stage, Helmsman School — it eases you in one idea at a time.

Everything is done with two thumbs.
Slide it up to go forward, centre for neutral (drifting), and down to go astern (reverse). Remember: a narrowboat keeps moving after you ease off — there are no brakes on the water, so plan ahead.
Push it left or right to swing the stern and turn the bow the other way, just like a real tiller. The boat turns most effectively when you have a little way on (some forward speed). Centre the rudder to straighten up.
Use your device's back gesture or the on-screen back/close control to leave a level and return to the level list.
Each level is a stretch of canal with a start and a finish. Your job is to pilot your boat from one to the other — cleanly.
Complete a level and the next one unlocks.
The canal twists left and right and sometimes pinches in. Slow down before a bend, start your turn early, and let the boat's length swing through. On narrow sections there's little room for error — patience pays.
Other people's boats are tied up along the bank. Give them a wide, slow berth — clipping a moored boat counts as a hit (and isn't very neighbourly).
Sometimes another boat is travelling the canal too. Canal etiquette applies: pass oncoming boats slowly, keep to your side, and don't barge through. The other skipper will try to be polite as well — give them room and you'll both get through.
A wharf is a concrete mooring along the bank. To moor, bring your boat gently alongside the wharf, lined up with it, and hold position there for a moment until the moor registers. Approach slowly and parallel — coming in too hot will just bump the edge.
Some wharves are optional; others are required stops you must make before the level will let you finish.
Locks raise or lower your boat between stretches of canal at different heights. Working a lock takes care:
You'll meet downhill and uphill locks, lock flights (several locks in a row), and both wide and narrow locks. Narrow locks are a single-boat squeeze — line up dead straight. The game introduces locks gently with on-screen guidance the first time.
Where the canal crosses over itself, you'll pass under a bridge or over an aqueduct. Aim for the centre of the opening and keep straight.
Finishing a level earns you one star. Many levels offer two extra bonus stars for doing something a little harder — for example finishing without any hits, within a tighter time, or without reversing. The bonus conditions for a level are shown on the level, and your best star rating is saved. Three stars on every level is the mark of a true master of the cut.
You hold a canal licence, and it works rather like the penalty points on a driving licence. Each time you come to grief — too many hits, running out of time, or otherwise coming unstuck on a level — you pick up points on your licence. The points are tallied as you play, so the cleaner your boating, the cleaner your licence. Take each run carefully, and remember you can always replay earlier levels to keep your record looking shipshape.

Canal Sim has a full soundtrack and characterful engine notes that change with your boat and throttle. The narrowboats themselves are voiced, too — they'll hail you and pass the time of day as you share the cut (the on-screen tutorial guides are text only). You can adjust the volume in the settings, and of course your device's mute switch works too. The App plays sound only — it never listens. It does not use your microphone.
Do I need an internet connection?
For the free, ad-supported version, yes — it needs an internet connection to play, and if you're offline it will ask you to reconnect. The one-off ad-free upgrade removes that requirement, so you can play completely offline.
Why am I seeing ads, and how do I remove them?
Canal Sim is free to play, supported by occasional full-screen (interstitial) ads shown at natural breaks, such as between attempts. A one-off in-app purchase removes the ads permanently. If you reinstall or switch device, you can restore that purchase — you won't pay twice.
Does the game collect my data?
The game itself doesn't collect your personal data, and your progress is saved only on your device. The free version's ads are served by Google AdMob, which uses data such as your device's advertising identifier to show ads, under Google's own privacy policy. Buying the ad-free upgrade removes the ads. See the Privacy Policy for full details.
Why does my device mention a microphone permission?
The App's sound library may list an audio/microphone permission by default, but Canal Sim never records audio or uses your microphone — it only plays sounds.
How do I reset my progress?
There's a reset option in the App, and you can also clear the App's data in your device settings or simply reinstall.
I'm stuck on a level — any advice?
Slow right down, take it one obstacle at a time, and use Pause to plan. Re-read the on-screen tips for that mechanic. Speed is almost never the answer on a canal.
